Questions

Where are my trips stored?

Only on your phone. There is no account and no copy anywhere else. If you delete the app, or lose the phone, the trips go with it. To keep a copy, open a trip's Summary and tap Export to Excel.

Can my friends see the trip on their phones?

No. One person records the expenses for everyone. Send the others the Excel report from the Summary tab.

How does scanning a receipt work?

From version 1.3.0, the Amount field of an expense has a scan button. Take a photo of the receipt and the app fills in its total, so you only type the description. The receipt is read on your phone by its own text recognition, and the photo is deleted straight away; it is not saved or sent anywhere. On a trip's first receipt the app asks which currency it is in, and later receipts use the currency of the last expense. Always check the amount: the app can pick the wrong number on crumpled, faded or unusual receipts. On Android, scanning needs Google Play services, and the first scan may wait until the reading models have downloaded.

Where do the exchange rates come from?

From ExchangeRate-API, which updates them once a day. The rate is filled in for you and can be changed, for example to the rate your card or money changer actually gave you. Each expense keeps the rate it was saved with, so later changes in rates do not alter past totals. Without a connection, the app uses the last rates it fetched.

How is "who pays whom" worked out?

For each person, the app adds up what they paid and what their share of every expense comes to. The difference is their balance. It then lists the fewest payments that bring every balance to zero.

Why won't an expense save?

The split has to add up to exactly 100%, or exactly 1 when using fractions. The line under the split says how much is still to allocate or how much it is over. "Split equally" fills it in for everyone ticked.

Can I change the currency everything is totalled in?

Yes. From version 1.2.0 each trip has a "Settle in" currency, chosen when you create the trip. It is fixed once the trip has expenses, because each expense keeps its exchange rate to that currency. Trips made in earlier versions stay in Hong Kong dollars. To pay back in another currency, tap the currency button next to "Settle up" on the Summary to show the payments in it at the latest rate.
